Contextual diversity in telephone interpreting: Voices from healthcare interpreters in Scotland

This study conducted in Scotland focuses on the contextual factors that shape healthcare interpreters’ performance when they interpret over telephone. It draws findings of two focus groups (n = 5 and 7) a Scottish urban area 2017 among interpreters with experience telephone interpreting (TI). The participants shared their experiences TI as related to issues include (1) impact different equipment used by clients respectively (2) strategies techniques deployed TI. Another issue emerged from was work–life balance. Judging contributions, are influenced multitude telephone, some which have been accorded sufficient significance literature. Among less-discussed specific kind providers policy interpreter’s employer regarding use mobile phones. participants’ input suggests respond challenges linked certain technologies assertiveness creativity, although may not be fully aware consequences behaviours. article highlights value exploring diversity situated practice.
